AI Search Optimization for Law Firms: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

What AI search optimization means for a law firm: how ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Copilot pick sources, what you can control, what is hype, and a prompt test you can run this week.

AI search optimization is the work of making your firm easy for ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot to find, understand and cite. For a law firm it comes down to three jobs: let their crawlers in, publish clear answers on your own pages, and keep your firm's facts identical everywhere they appear online.

The reason it matters is clicks. When Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared. Links inside the summary itself were clicked on 1% of visits.

A prospective client who asks an assistant "who handles DUI cases near me" gets a short written answer with a few sources, not ten blue links. If your firm is not among the pages the assistant draws on, you are not on that shortlist. The good news: most of the work is the same work as solid law firm SEO, done with more care about facts and wording.

How do ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot choose which firms to cite?

AI assistants with web access answer legal and local questions by searching an index, pulling passages from the pages that come back, and writing a summary that cites some of them. So the first filter is ordinary: your page has to be crawlable, indexed and relevant to the question before any AI tool can quote it.

Any honest answer to how to rank in AI Overviews starts here. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional technical requirements. Google also describes "query fan-out": the system runs several related searches across subtopics to build one answer.

That means a page answering a follow-up question (cost, timeline, what happens at the first hearing) can be pulled into an answer for a broader query. Microsoft says Bing and Copilot rely on the same crawling, indexing and ranking foundation as traditional Bing search. OpenAI and Perplexity run their own crawlers. None of them publishes a formula for which sources get cited, so anyone who claims to know it exactly is guessing.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO, GEO or AEO?

AI search optimization, generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), LLM SEO, ChatGPT SEO and AI SEO are different labels for one goal: getting your pages used and cited in AI-written answers. The foundation is the same as classic SEO. What changes is how many slots there are, and how little you can measure.

Both big search engines say so in writing. Google's guidance for AI features says the same foundational SEO practices apply and that specific optimization isn't required. Bing's webmaster guidelines open with a section titled "SEO Fundamentals Still Apply to Grounding and AI Experiences." Three things do change for a law firm:

  • Fewer slots. An AI answer names a handful of firms, not a page of results. Ranking sixth is worth less when the answer above it lists three firms.
  • Mentions without clicks. An assistant can name your firm and give your phone number without anyone visiting your site. That shows up as calls, not always as sessions.
  • Facts from beyond your website. The answer can blend your site with your Business Profile, directory listings and reviews. An error in any of them can reach a prospective client.

Step one: make sure search and AI crawlers can reach your site

Blocking can happen without anyone at the firm deciding it: a security plugin, a hosting setting or a firewall rule can make the call. Check four things.

1. Your robots.txt file

OpenAI documents separate crawlers for search and for training. OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search; sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. The two settings are independent, so you can allow search and refuse training. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems.

Perplexity's crawler documentation describes PerplexityBot as the bot that surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results and says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. For Google, robots.txt rules for Googlebot are what control AI Overviews and AI Mode; the separate Google-Extended token covers training and grounding in some of Google's other systems, according to the same Google guidance linked above.

2. Your firewall or CDN

Google's best practices for AI features include making sure crawling is allowed "by any CDN or hosting infrastructure," not only in robots.txt. Perplexity's documentation even includes steps for allowing its bots through Cloudflare and AWS firewalls. Ask whoever manages your hosting to confirm that verified search and AI crawlers are not challenged or blocked.

3. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs

Google lists making sure important content is available in textual form, and Bing's guidelines warn against hiding critical content behind client-side rendering. In a test published by searchVIU, ChatGPT did not pick up a price that was inserted by JavaScript after the page loaded, while Gemini did.

If your fees, practice areas or office addresses load inside a widget, a slider or an image, put them in plain HTML text. This is basic technical SEO, and it now affects more than Google.

4. Bing, which feeds Copilot

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your XML sitemap. Bing's guidelines ask site owners to use IndexNow to notify Bing when URLs are added, updated or removed, and say timely notifications help reduce outdated or incorrect URL references in Copilot responses.

What should your pages say so AI tools can quote them?

Each page should answer the questions a prospective client asks, in plain sentences that make sense on their own: what you handle, where, for whom, how fees work and what happens next. An assistant building an answer needs a sentence it can repeat accurately. A specific two-sentence answer gives it one; a paragraph of adjectives does not.

Vague (hard to cite)Specific (easy to cite)
"We fight aggressively for your rights.""We defend misdemeanor and felony DUI charges in [County] and [County] courts, including driver's license suspension hearings."
"Affordable rates.""Uncontested divorces are billed at a flat fee quoted after the first consultation. Contested cases are billed hourly against a retainer."
"Decades of combined experience.""[Attorney name] has been admitted in [State] since [year] and handles estate planning and probate in [County]."
"Call today for help.""The first consultation is free and takes about 30 minutes, by phone or at the [City] office."

Then cover the follow-up questions, since one prompt can set off several related searches. A firm with separate, solid pages on fees, timelines, the first consultation and each court or county it serves has more pages that can be pulled in. That is the core of good practice area content.

A few habits make your pages easier to quote correctly:

  • Name the jurisdiction. Law changes at state lines. "In Texas" or "in Cook County" tells the assistant which questions your answer fits.
  • Put attorney facts on attorney pages. Bar admissions, year admitted, courts, languages spoken and practice areas, in plain text. When someone asks about a lawyer by name, that page is the source you control.
  • Date and maintain legal explainers. Statutes, filing fees and deadlines change. An outdated figure that an assistant repeats with your name next to it is worse than no figure.

Why do your firm's details need to match everywhere?

An AI answer about a specific firm can draw on several sources at once: your website, your Google Business Profile, legal directories, your state bar profile and review sites. When those sources disagree on your name, address, phone, attorneys or practice areas, the assistant has to pick one, and it may pick the outdated one.

Google's guidance for AI features lists "checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date" among its best practices. Start with your Google Business Profile, then work through your legal directory profiles and your bar listing. Check each one for:

  • The firm name exactly as it appears on your website and signage
  • Street address, suite number and main phone number
  • Current attorneys only, with correct bar admissions
  • The practice areas you actually take, worded the same way
  • A website link that points to your current domain over https
  • Hours, and whether consultations happen in person, by phone or by video

Pay special attention after an attorney leaves, an office moves or the firm name changes. Old directory profiles do not update themselves, and an assistant has no reliable way to know which version is current. This is the same discipline as local SEO for lawyers, with a second audience reading the results.

Does schema markup help law firms appear in AI answers?

Schema markup helps some AI systems, but it is no substitute for stating a fact in visible text. Microsoft has said schema helps Copilot understand content. Google says AI Overviews need no special schema. An independent test found that chatbots fetching a live page missed a fact that existed only in JSON-LD.

The evidence, source by source:

  • Microsoft: Fabrice Canel of Bing said at SMX Munich in March 2025 that schema markup helps Microsoft's LLMs understand content, as Search Engine Roundtable reported. Copilot runs on the Bing index, so this fits.
  • Google: its AI features guidance says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add, and asks that your structured data match the visible text on the page.
  • Live fetch tests: searchVIU tested ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode in October 2025. A price placed only in JSON-LD was found by none of them. The price shown in visible HTML was found by ChatGPT, Gemini and, once the page was indexed, Google AI Mode. searchVIU notes that schema may still be used earlier, when search engines index a page.

The practical rule: mark up what is already visible, and never let JSON-LD be the only place a fact lives. Bing's guidelines say structured data must accurately represent visible content and that misleading markup may be ignored. The setup is covered in schema markup for law firms.

How do you test whether AI tools recommend your firm?

Write 15 to 20 prompts a real prospect would type, run each one in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot, and record whether your firm is named, which of your pages is cited, which other sources are cited and whether the facts are right. Run the same set every month so you can see what changes.

Build the prompt list from the way clients actually talk. Your intake notes and the questions callers ask in the first five minutes are the best source. Mix these types:

Prompt typeExampleWhat it tells you
Shortlist"Who are good DUI lawyers in Tampa?"Whether you make the list, and who does
Situation"I was rear-ended and the other driver has no insurance. What should I do in Texas?"Whether your explainer pages get used
Cost"How much does an uncontested divorce lawyer cost in Columbus, Ohio?"Whether your fee information is used
Comparison"Should I hire a local immigration lawyer or a national firm?"Which sources frame the decision
Brand"What do clients say about [Firm Name]?" and "Is [Firm Name] a good firm?"Whether the facts about you are accurate

A few rules make the results useful:

  • Run each prompt three times. Answers can change from one run to the next, and Google notes that AI Mode and AI Overviews use different models and techniques, so even its two features will not show the same responses or links.
  • Use a clean session. Start a new chat each time, signed out or in a private window where the tool allows it.
  • Name the place. Put the city in the prompt instead of relying on the tool to guess where you are.
  • Log sources, not just mentions. Record every domain cited: directories, review sites, competitor practice pages, news stories. Those are the pages feeding answers in your market.

Then read the log for patterns. If competitors are cited from their own practice pages and you are not, you have a content gap. If directories are cited and your profile there is thin or wrong, fix the profile.

If you are named with an old address or a departed attorney, fix consistency before anything else. If you are named but never linked, you are getting mentions without visits, which is worth knowing when you read your intake numbers.

How do you measure AI search traffic and citations?

Imperfectly, using four sources you already have or can set up at no cost: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, your analytics referral data and your intake form. No single report shows your firm's visibility across every assistant, which is why the monthly prompt test matters.

  • Google Search Console. Google says appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the "Web" search type, as part of your overall search traffic.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools. The AI Performance report shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations, plus the "grounding queries" linked to those citations. Microsoft notes that it shows which content was cited, not rankings or importance.
  • Analytics referrals. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, so those visits can be separated in Google Analytics. Check your referral sources for other AI tools as well.
  • Intake. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" to the "How did you hear about us?" question on your intake form and phone script. A client who reads your name in an AI answer and then searches for you directly looks like branded or direct traffic in your reports. Asking is the only way to catch that.

What AI search tactics should a law firm ignore?

Skip anything that promises guaranteed placement, sells files the platforms do not ask for, or tries to trick a model. Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed and that AI text files are not needed, and Bing warns that attempts to manipulate its language models can get a site removed from its search experiences.

  • Guaranteed AI placement. Nobody controls what an assistant writes. Google states that meeting every requirement still does not guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed or served.
  • AI files sold as a fix. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. An llms.txt file is no substitute for crawl access, clear pages and accurate listings.
  • Hidden instructions for AI. Bing's guidelines say content "designed to manipulate or interfere with language models used by Bing or Copilot may result in reduced visibility or removal."
  • Mass-produced pages. Bing says large-scale content generated without oversight or editorial review "may be excluded from indexing." Fifty near-identical city pages written by a tool are a liability, not an asset.
  • Schema-only facts. Per the test above, a fact that lives only in JSON-LD may never reach a chatbot that fetches your page.

Can AI search create an ethics problem for your firm?

You cannot control how an assistant words its answer, but everything you publish for it to quote is still a communication about your services. The comment to ABA Model Rule 7.1 says the rule governs all such communications, including advertising, and that unsubstantiated claims or comparisons can be misleading. Your state's version is what applies to you.

That matters more when your words travel. A line like "the best injury firm in the county" on your homepage can be repeated by an assistant as if it were a finding.

The comment warns that an unsubstantiated comparison with other lawyers "may be misleading if presented with such specificity as would lead a reasonable person to conclude that the comparison or claim can be substantiated," and that truthfully reported results can mislead if they create unjustified expectations for other clients.

The same comment points to Rule 8.4(c), which makes conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation professional misconduct. Keep that in mind before anyone suggests planting reviews or forum posts to steer AI answers.

States differ on testimonials, specialization claims, disclaimers and reviews, so check your state bar's rules and ethics opinions before publishing comparative or results-based copy. A plain-English overview is in lawyer advertising rules; treat it as a starting point, not legal advice.

Where to start this month

If you do nothing else this quarter, do these five things in order:

  1. Check robots.txt and your firewall settings for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot, and decide on purpose whether to allow GPTBot.
  2. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and set up IndexNow.
  3. Fix your Google Business Profile and your main directory profiles so the name, address, phone and attorney list match your website exactly.
  4. Rewrite your three most important practice area pages so each one opens with a direct, specific answer and covers fees, process and service area in plain text.
  5. Run the prompt test, save the log, and repeat it next month.

None of this guarantees that an assistant will name your firm; nothing can. It does remove the reasons it currently might not. If you want an outside read first, start with a law firm SEO audit, or book a 30-minute visibility review with Emir, who works with each firm directly.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions.

Should my firm block GPTBot?

That is a business choice. OpenAI says GPTBot collects content that may be used to train its models, while your setting for OAI-SearchBot decides whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search, and the two are independent. Blocking GPTBot while allowing OAI-SearchBot keeps you eligible for ChatGPT search and tells OpenAI not to train its models on your content.

Can I correct wrong information an AI tool gives about my firm?

Not directly. You cannot edit an AI answer, but you can fix what it draws on. Check which sources it cites for the wrong fact, correct your own pages, Business Profile and directory listings, and notify Bing through IndexNow. Then rerun the same prompt once the pages have had time to be recrawled.

How long does it take for changes to show up in AI answers?

It depends on the platform. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Google says recrawling can take anywhere from several days to several months, and Bing recommends IndexNow so it hears about updates sooner. Even then, a changed page only matters once it is picked up for a relevant question.

Can a law firm pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

OpenAI's crawler documentation describes OAI-AdsBot, which checks landing pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT, so paid placements exist there. The sources an answer cites are a separate thing, and the documentation describes no way to buy them. Any ad you run is still a communication about your services under your state's version of Rule 7.1.

Is AI search replacing Google for people looking for a lawyer?

Public data on how people choose lawyers through AI tools is thin. What is documented: AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search itself, and Pew found that people click regular results less often when an AI summary appears. Being one of the cited sources matters more as a result, wherever the search starts.
